105 years ago today, an explosion rocked the city of Halifax, Nova Scotia. On the morning of 6 December 1917, two merchant ships collided in Halifax’s harbour: the French ship Mont Blanc, packed with munitions and bound for Europe, and the Norwegian vessel Imo. When the Mont Blanc’s munitions detonated, it caused one of the largest human-made explosions ever, prior to the atomic bombs. The blast and following tsunami levelled the north end of Halifax.
