At the 1960 Rome Olympics, Wilma Rudolph became the first woman to win three gold medals in track and field events at a single Olympics Games. This was an astonishing accomplishment given her childhood illness. Diagnosed with polio, Rudolph wore leg braces for several years. Due to segregated medical facilities, her family was forced to travel 90 miles several times a week to visit her doctors.
