Fifteen skiers went missing on Tuesday following a massive avalanche in California's Lake Tahoe region. One person remains missing but is presumed dead.

That number was revised down from the 10 initially reported, as first responders discovered that the total number of skiers was 15, not 16. Because of the severe weather, it took several hours for search-and-rescue personnel to transport the six skiers to safety.

The avalanche near Lake Tahoe in California has left at least eight people dead and one person missing in what officials describe as the deadliest such event in decades.
